Daily I draw in my sketchbooks and many times use the sketch ideas for paintings.

Sketch vs. Finished Art Charles Kaufman

When I create my sketches I am just looking for a seed of an idea. The drawings are very rough and simple.
Once I start the painting I then proceed to make the art based on a "whatever happens, happens" type of painting philosophy.

Title: "Woman with Wine" (2005)
Sketch size: 8 x 15 cm
Finished painting:
50 x 100 cm
I like the sketch idea and pose of the woman and since my style has evolved over the years I am thinking of painting a new version-
Title: "The Atelier" (1993)
Sketch size: 10 x 20 cm
Finished painting:
80 x 100 cm
It was a rough sketch of an art studio and I figured the walls would be full of paintings and sketches.
Title: "Tuscany Landscape (2003)
Sketch size: 3 x 6 cm each
Finished painting: 50 x 100 cm
Lots of fast, quick sketch ideas of landscapes with a road going down the middle.

The ideas was create something a bit strange...fill it in as I painted it.
Title: "Road Trip for Cherry Cheese Cake" (2005)
Sketch size: 6 x 9 cm
Finished painting: 80 x 100 cm
Title: "Cityscape (1998)
Sketch size: 15 x 20 cm each
Finished painting: 60 x 80 cm
How could I paint buildings stacked up on each other. I made a couple of different versions of the idea looking to accentuate the perspective and towering of the buildings.
Title: "Woman Painting a Still Life" (2006)
Sketch size: 6 x 7 cm
Finished painting: 60 x 100 cm
The painting was supposed to be on a square canvas, but I did not have one when I started so I had to reformat the idea somewhat.
